Sierra Leone Under 17- Sides (Sierra Stars) on 3rd October 2022 progressed to the next rounds of the West Africa Union Tournament (WAFU) in Mauritania.
The lads progressed to the Semi-finals of the ongoing WAFU tournament without kicking a ball; the decision came as a result of their counterparts the Leon Stars of Liberia who had two of their players failed MRI scans and knock them out of the tournament due to overage and now the national under -17 team will face either Senegal or Mali in the Semi-Finals on Friday in a much decider.
The National under -17 sides got a good opening in their first match against the host Mauritania as they defeated them by three goals to nil. The goal scorers were Daniel Deen Sesay, and Abu Bakarr Bangura, as the team got all three deserving points in their first match.
After their impressive win against Mauritania, the National Under-17 players returned to training on Monday evening at the Stade Sheikh Boidiya, Nouakchott.
Coach Mohamed Lamin Kamara took his players to train to continue their preparation ahead of their encounter against Liberia U-17 with various training regiments.
The session which lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes saw all 22 players taking part in the session active
Mansur Koroma the media Officer attached to the team said the players are in high spirits to face any of the West African nations and they have made a significant recovery from their last match and the pitfalls they suffered in that match have been fixed ready to face their next opponent.
The First win of the national under-17 side has been the highest win since the last squad that made it to the World Cup Championship in Finland where a bulk of those players took part in the 2003/2024 Junior World Cup in Finland.
Sierra Leone has a poor record against Mali and Senegal when they face each other on Friday for a final place in the under-17 West Africa zone A tournament and the winner of the tournament will automatically qualify for Africa under -17 tournament in Egypt.
