Sierra Leone Female Premier League has on 25th August 2022 disclosed that September 24th has been set aside as the official date for the kick-start of the Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League 2022/23 season.
A verification process was conducted early in July to ensure all qualified female football clubs provide necessary details of contracts, and other supporting and relevant documents of their players.
However, as per confirmation by the Minister of Sports, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh the WPLB whose chairperson is a top media personality Asmaa James will receive a massive cash boost of Le1.5 billion by the government of Sierra Leone to run the country’s first ever Female Premier league. While a further boost of Le1 billion was also allocated to the WPLB through the country’s football governing body Sierra Leone Football Association to run the cost and expenses of the country’s first-ever women’s elite league season.
Twelve (12) teams from across the five regions in the country would be battling it out in this very first edition of the country’s top-tier female football league season, with two (2) teams from each region except the Western Area with four (4) teams taken into consideration its largeness.
Four teams from the country’s capital Freetown and Eight other Provincial teams look set to compete for the Women’s first ever elite 2022/2023 league season. These teams include; VEM Buck FC, FC Kallon Female, Ram Kay FC, Sierra Leone Correctional FC, Sierra Leone Police Female FC, Mena Queens FC, Kahunla Queens, Mogbwemo Queens FC, Patricia Umu FC, Malema Queens FC, Albitaya Queens, and Koya Queens FC.
The WPLB will release official league fixtures and assigned playing venues early in September few weeks before the commencement of the league proper.
The much-anticipated Female Premier League is set to give more boosts to the Country’s Female Football development and will also serve as a building stage for the various female national teams to get the required players for the International assignment.
