Sierra Leone’s Sara Joo and Zainab Keita have on 28th July 2022 both qualified for the quarter-finals in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth games as they get a bye in their respective draws in the 50kg and 70kg draws.
This is the first-ever female representation of Sierra Leone at the Commonwealth Games and the first time, we are competing in the quarter-final stage of the competition.
The boxing rules have also provided a qualification for 61-63.5Kg John Brown and 63-67Kg Yusif Deen Kargbo respectively to the round of 16 without throwing punches.
Another development in the Commonwealth Games on the 5th of August 2022, three (3) Wrestlers from Sierra Leone will be competing in the following stages
1. Zainab Barrie will be competing in 57Kg Women’s Freestyle and if she qualified will progress to the next rounds of the games.
2. Sheku Kassegbama will be competing in 86Kg Men’s Freestyle and if he wins the hit he progressed to the next rounds of the Commonwealth Games.
3.Mohamed Bundu will be competing in 125 Kg Men’s Freestyle and if he qualified progressed to next rounds of the games. And they on the 6th August 2022, the remaining two (2) Wrestlers will be also competing in following weight category.
1. Madusu Koroma will be competing in the 76Kg Women’s Freestyle and if she qualified to the next stage of the games.
2. Mohamed Sesay will be competing in the 74Kg Men’s freestyle category and if he qualified progressed to next rounds of games. According to the organizers the draw of the competition will be made on the 4th August 2022 where the teams will know their respective opponents.
The first Sierra Leone events after the opening ceremony on Friday 29th 2022 will be boxing at (10:00 am). And Joshua Wyse will be in competing in the (50M) Butterfly heat one, and Isha Kanu will be competing in the (50m) Breast Stroke in heat one.
Sierra Leone athletes in the other sporting disciplines will be in action in the following days as they are all in high spirits as they all hope to grab medals in the Commonwealth Games.
