The waste management department at the Koidu New Sembehun City Council has embarked on a massive cleaning exercise in the Municipality of Koidu.
The environment and social officer Koidu New Sembehun City Council Nana Jalloh Conteh told this medium that although it is their mandate as a council to keep the city clean, the rationale behind the pending massive cleaning exercise in the municipality of Koidu is to address the problem of flooding that usually occurs whenever there is a heavy down pour In certain areas within the city of Koidu.
She said the cleaning exercise is purely targeting the clearing of drainages which have served as dust bins for some people thereby responsible for the previous flooding in certain areas in Koidu City.
Madam Conteh maintained that the importance of the cleaning exercise cannot be over emphasized as it will not only address the problem of flooding in the municipality of Koidu but also the spate of malaria related sicknesses as the drainages will no longer serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The environment and social officer Koidu New Sembehun City council has strictly warned those in the habit of packing sand and other building materials alongside the streets of Koidu City as it does not only cause flooding when they get into the drainages but also a recipe for road accidents.
She pointed out that defaulters will lose their building materials and pays the fine of five hundred thousand Leones in the country’s new currency. which is previously referred to as five hundred thousand Leones.
