The Office of National Security (ONS) has issued a press release condemning the act of using social media to spread tribalistic comments that have the potential to disrupt the peace.

According to the Director of Strategic Communication Unit at ONS, Abdul Karim Will, they are highly disappointed at the high spate of negative tribalistic comments awash in the social media. He said ONS issued a timely press release to warn perpetrators to desist from their act before the law takes its course.

He said freedom of speech, as a right, should be carried out responsibly, noting that it is against the law to write or share comments that have the potential to bring chaos. He said the current trend of cyberbullying is an issue that should be nipped in the body, adding that Sierra Leoneans should not be quick to forget the eleven years of a bloody war that wrecked the country.

It could be recalled that Sierra Leone had passed the cyber bill into law but the enactment has not been much productive considering the high spate of cyber bulling and sharing of peace-threatened comments. The police had issued a stern warning that there is a provision in the law to bring perpetrators to book.

Although the cyber law is in force, there are Sierra Leoneans fervently sharing and listening to one Adebayo who is not residing in the country but uses the social media to spread invectives and tribalistic comments widely circulated.

However, the June 18th Press Release from the ONS has been widely welcomed by peace loving citizens who are calling on the authority for action to prevent tribal conflict.
