Sierra Leone Cricket Association has over the weekend organized female Cricket Festival to celebrate Women’s Cricket Festival and the event took place at Kingtom Police play ground in Freetown.
Francis Trevor Samura, the Chairman of the Sierra Leone Cricket Association in his statement described the event as successful seeing hundreds of females turn out to grace it; noting that it attracted over five hundred participants across several communities in Freetown ranging from different ages.
He further that it is also part of the SLCA Cricket Council’s (ICC) growth strategy, and as well increases the interest of the participants in various areas as players, fans, Umpires, Scorers, and Volunteers, to help promote the sport in the Country.
The program is designed to attract over five hundred female participants drawn from different communities in Freetown. Cutting across age 6 to age seventy, the event allured parents and their children for the first time since the start of the year.
The aim is to celebrate women’s cricket in a funfair way and to increase their number in the same breath. The event will entice participants to follow cricket either as fans or as players.
This is part of the SLCA strategic program to inspire participation and conceivably meet ICC growth benchmarks.
Last year, eighty female teachers were trained on the basics of cricket. The rationale then was to help them transfer knowledge gained to pupils in their respective schools.
The difference between this event and the one held last year is that the current one involves virtually ladies of all ages.
