As the 2023 elections draw closer, the battle to clinch a symbol under the Sierra Leone People’s Party and vie for chairmanship for Moyamba District Council in the South of Sierra Leone is getting tighter and tighter every day. The fact remains that the chairmanship position has never be occupied twice by any previous occupants.
According to sources, the present chairman, Joseph Mbogba has done his level best during his first term in office but most people refer to him as a very slow man. Earlier speculation stated he wanted to contest for Parliamentary seat in Lower Banta chiefdom where he hails from but changes his mind to go in for another term at Council.
Alfred Banya, deputy chairman, is said to be very active spanning from his wide range of experience in education and his nearly ten years’ service at Council. He has not thrown his hat into the ring but many people strongly believe that will be done before the year ends.
Another man who contested in the last primaries, Dr. Bah, a lecturer at Njala University will be also be interested but has not a word to his people.
For the first time since the re-introduction of Local Council in 2004, no woman has contested for Council’s leadership in Moyamba. As the 2023 local council elections approach, women rights activist, Madam Kadi Lassayo has decided to contest with male counterpart. She is a dedicated woman many see her as an icon to represent women in the district.
