The District programme Manager Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD), Joseph Sahr Ansumana has said that intolerance could play a leading part to bring about civil disorder in any society.
He made the statement when talking about the importance of the International World Tolerance day. He noted that the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNSCOS) in 1995 declared the World Tolerance day for the public to be aware of the dangers of intolerance in their Communities.
Joseph Ansumana further intimated that intolerance brings separation among family members, community members, religions leaders and political parties. He said if they cannot tolerate each other’s belief and opinions which often lead to misunderstanding and hostility among groups or organizations, noting intolerance needs to stress and great unhappiness in any community”.
Non-violence and tolerance are key factors to peaceful co-existence. The secret is to make people acknowledge the diversity in culture, and yet appreciate the beauty in different opinions, race beliefs and ideas thereby promoting the practice of respecting others rights and freedom; and educating people about the damaging effects of intolerance assume the core of this global initiative, he said.
Talking on the significance of the world tolerance day, Ansumana stated that it lies in the fact that tolerance is not just a moral obligation, but an essential need for the young and aged. Meanwhile, the theme for this year’s celebration is “Tolerance is respect” acceptance and appreciation of the world culture and ways of being human”.
