Egyptian Doctor Dr. Waheed M Hassan of the Life Care Hospital at Lumley in Freetown has performed yet another groundbreaking surgery in extracting a fibroid from a patient weighing 12 kilograms without opening using surgical blade. Dr. Waheed M Hassan says because of the seriousness of the cases coming forward there could be a need for the office of the first lady to partner with Life Care in ensuring that more women with the condition are saved.
The patient that has successfully been operated to remove the biggest fibroid is said to be in a stable condition. She is said to recovering very rapidly. The fibroid was removed after four hours operation using technique whereby scanning is used to trace the tumor.
The uterus of the patient remained intact which means she can deliver a child if she wishes. For years the patient had a swollen stomach that appeared as if she was pregnant.
The center has thus been overwhelmed with women thronging the facility to get service in gynecology, obstetrics and infertility conditions. These are some of the problems patients had sought treatment abroad.
Life Care Hospital at Lumley is using special techniques and tools namely: laparoscopy and hysteroscopy that has drastically reduced the complications women have been faced with in Sierra Leone.
Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in reproductive health care are means of examining a woman’s internal pelvic structure to provide important information regarding infertility and common gynecologic disorders. Problems that cannot be discovered by an external physical examination may be discovered by laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, two procedures that provide a direct look at the pelvic organs. These procedures may be recommended as part of your infertility care, depending on your particular situation. Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy can be used for both diagnostic (looking only) and operative (looking and treating) purposes.
Life Care Hospital is also providing surgical wonder cancer related conditions of the cervix, ovaries and wombs of patients.
Dr. Waheed M Hassan says he is open to partnership with the ministry of health for training opportunities in the surgical technology employed at Life Care Hospital to ensure that more women are impacted.
