A significant boost to local employment and community empowerment was unveiled today as 50 brand new boats were launched across all seven coastal districts of Sierra Leone.

This initiative aims to enhance the fishing industry while fostering sustainable livelihoods among local youth.

Constructed by various local companies, the project saw Debia Construction leading efforts in Kambia, while Lacoste Engineering took charge in Port Loko. R. Jordan Logistics facilitated boat construction in Bonthe, and Marathon Max Ltd contributed to the project in both Pujehun and Moyamba districts. Yangs Construction operated in the Western Urban area, and Kadeen Construction completed the initiative in Western Rural.

This diverse involvement of local firms underscores the project’s commitment to community engagement and economic development.

The new boats are set to benefit approximately 1,000 young people, organized into groups of 20 to form cooperatives. This structure is designed to empower these youth to engage effectively in the fishing industry, creating sustainable livelihoods that can transform their communities.

The project encourages collaboration and teamwork, essential components of cooperative success.

Throughout the construction process, extensive consultations were held with stakeholders and community members, ensuring local supervision and ownership of the initiative.

This approach not only enhances the fishing industry but also strengthens community ties, promoting a sense of pride and shared purpose among residents.

His Excellency Julius Maada Bio, the President of Sierra Leone, commended the initiative during the launch event, highlighting its importance for local economies and youth empowerment. “This project is a testament to our commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for our young people and enhancing the livelihoods of our coastal communities,” he stated.

The initiative garnered support from various organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNDP Africa, the UNDP Regional Africa Bureau, the World Bank Office in Freetown, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Orange Sierra Leone, UNICEF, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the UN General Assembly, the Korean International Cooperation Agency, and the Freetown City Council.

The initiative does not only represents a significant investment in the local economy but also serves as a model for community-driven development. By providing the tools and resources necessary for success, it empowers young people to take charge of their futures and strengthens the fabric of coastal communities throughout Sierra Leone.

As the boats set sail, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of a generation eager to build a sustainable future economically.
