The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE).

Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, announced the results in a televised statement on October 29, 2025.

According to the minister, the 2025 BECE results show a modest improvement over the previous year, with a general pass rate of 94%, up from 93% in 2024. The results also highlight a significant improvement in female performance, with ten of the top sixteen candidates being female. Mariama Yele-Bangura of Providence International High School in Freetown emerged as the top candidate with an aggregate score of 7.

The minister noted that out of 129,260 registered candidates, 122,037 candidates sat at least one subject and had their grades released. The individual paper pass rate stood at 90.1%, the third-highest ever recorded in Sierra Leone’s BECE history. A total of 114,709 candidates obtained a minimum of five passes, including Language Arts or Mathematics, marking a 2% increase from last year.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all children complete basic education and successfully transition to senior secondary school. The steady improvement in results signals progress in that direction. The results reflect the hard work and dedication of students, teachers, and parents, and the ministry’s ongoing efforts to improve the education sector are clearly yielding positive results.
