… 1,991 admitted cases, 3 death for 2020”

Bonthe districts is challenged in many social service delivery areas but the Medical Superintendent in the district Dr. Brima Bobson Sesay has disclosed that 2020 mortality rate was very low, with only three deaths recorded. The MD made the disclosure to the President and his wife during their visit to the district recently.
Sharing statistics on cases admitted at the hospital the MD said that out of the 1,991 patient that were admitted for 2020 they recorded only three deaths. This accounts for a passing mark of 66.6%.
Dr. Sesay told the President that even with these successes the hospital is faced with so many constraints, highlighting limited number of nurses.
While expressing appreciation to the Bio government for awarding PIN code to about 32 nurses from the Bonthe government hospital, he was quick to make a case for those who have been serving as volunteers for years without recognition or Personal Identification Number (PIN code).
“We have one operating theater and if we have to conduct emergency cases it will not be possible; we also need an expansion of the theater, we need overhead light and the room can be very inconvenient before and during operation because both air conditioners are not in good working order” Dr. Sesay said.
He appealed to the President for an expansion of the labor ward and provision of additional beds in the female surgical ward.
He said due to limited beds “we normally discharge patients prematurely because we do prioritize cases.”
He further revealed that for the year 2020 the hospital has recorded more maternal cases which he described as major direct obstetric conditions that recorded the three deaths.
During the inspection tour of the hospital facility, Mayor of Bonthe Municipal Council, Leyemin Joe Sandi, heaped praises on the medial officials that they have been very professionals in conducting major and minor operations.
He said: “I want to express my gratitude to the doctors and nurses, as I was not planning to do my operation anywhere rather than this hospital; I did because I wanted the people to have confidence in medical team. These guys were very professional and they are not just conducting common operations but complex ones also and my operation was a success story.”
In response President Bio expressed appreciation to the medical team for their tremendous efforts in maintaining the standards of the hospital. He applauded measures put in place to record low number of mortality death rate.
The President requested the Medical Superintendent to document all what they need including the administrative issues, medical laboratory logistics, the expansion of the hospital and many other related inputs that his government will look into to address speedily.
On the other hand, the First lady Mrs. Fatima Bio presented gifts to the patients, matrons, nurses and doctors.
She said: “I always appreciate visiting this hospital it has been the best, very hygienic and you have been putting a lot of efforts in its upkeep. Your hard work has given hope to the people of Bonthe Island and the government as a whole. My Husband and I will continue to render assistance in sustaining the gains recorded.”
On his part the Deputy Mayor of the district Mohamed M. Robinson said he decided to solely construct a four bedroom flat for the aged in the hospital. He said he saw it as a necessity to have private wards for eminent citizens and the elderly within the community in protecting their privacy and according them respect.
The senior matron of the hospital was full of praise and thanks on behalf of the nurses and patients for the kind gestures extended to them and for recognizing their work. She reassured that all gestures rendered will be judiciously managed and used for their intended purposes.
