In a landmark address today, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, emphasized the crucial phase of the Constitutional Review Process, marking a significant milestone for the nation. Speaking at a Special Presidential DEPAC Meeting in Freetown on Thursday, April 11th, 2024, President Bio underscored the transformative nature of this journey, spanning nearly two decades.
President Bio articulated that the Constitutional Review Process transcends a mere legal revision, portraying it as a profound endeavor to redefine Sierra Leone’s future. He highlighted the process’s historical context, tracing it back to the aftermath of the nation’s civil war and the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
The President reiterated his administration’s steadfast commitment to concluding this critical process, which was initiated by previous administrations. He noted the efforts undertaken, including the issuance of a White Paper in 2022, which encapsulated the aspirations and contributions of Sierra Leoneans toward enhancing the rule of law, peace, and human capital development.
Acknowledging the significant strides already made, President Bio outlined various reforms and laws enacted as a result of the Review Process. These include reforms in media laws, abolition of the death penalty, land laws, education rights, anti-corruption measures, gender equality, and political party regulations, among others.
Looking forward, President Bio delineated the forthcoming steps in the Review Process, highlighting the drafting of constitutional instruments and parliamentary debates. He stressed the importance of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability, underscoring the need for public awareness and participation.
President Bio called for collective efforts from all stakeholders, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of the endeavor, aimed at benefiting all Sierra Leoneans. He urged diligence, integrity, and patriotism in approaching the task, emphasizing its enduring impact on the nation’s democratic future.
