The National Commission for Democracy (NCD) on Monday 23rd January 2023 applauded the enactment of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Law by the leadership of President Bio in a press statement issued.
This conforms to its mandate of assessing the government’s democratic deficit and recommending remedies towards truthful democratic culture.
NCD recognized that a serious portion of the barrier in the democratic terrain of Sierra Leone had been narrowed after the enactment of the gender law which accounted for thirty per cent of women’s participation in parliament, seeking employment and job creation among others.
“This move by President Bio is worth commending as it has far-reaching implications for the consolidation of democratic good governance in the context of positive participation for women of this great nation, even as we approach the next general parliamentary and presidential election,’’ the press release stated.
The Management of the National Commission for Democracy appreciated President Bio for such a laudable venture; adding that such a move, among others, would potentially uplift the image of the country on a democratic pedestal within the global stage context. NCD urged the full implementation of the letter and the spirit of the law as women had been accorded their rightful place and position in the governance of the country.
Apart from that, National Commission for Democracy encouraged all supporters of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment to remain steadfast and mindful in the promotion of this course regardless of the victory being achieved. The press release stated that a place of prominence in the governance system of the state had been plugged in the best interest of the country for women in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
